Transcription or voice recognition?

Question by huntingrl: Transcription or voice recognition?
I work in a research lab in the Education Dept. of my university. We are looking to purchase either equipment or software to assist professors in transcribing interviews for their research. Keep in mind that the professors usually have little or no experience in transcription. If they are typically looking to transcribe about 1-4 hours of digital audio (interviews, etc.), what might be our most practical and/or cost-effective tool(s)? Thank you!!

Well .. voice recognition software at best going to get you about 95% accuracy – that’s one in ten words wrong.
No software will work on ‘strangers’ voices — that the system has not been ‘trained’ to figure out what is being said…. so as far as one to one interviews transcribed of ‘random’ people theonly option you have is the human touch, and it can be expensive.
I know some transcription services in the UK that start out at £1.50 / audio minute. The transcription service I work for starts out at 0.80p / audio minute…http://transcriptdivas.co.uk/the-best-london-transcription-services-and-prices/…. yes that right…we are the cheapest transcription services in London as well as the cheapest transcription services in the UK!! viva la Divas! http://transcriptdivas.co.uk/
