I am thinking of purchasing some kind of sound system and would like a cd player/recorder. is Marantz a good name or no?

Yes – miles better than most mass-market consumer audio stuff.

Marantz has been around forever. Definitely a quality brand.
Marantz no longer makes products. The name was bought out by Philips about 15 years ago. However it is used on good quality gear. The internal CD mechanism is regular Philips consumer ware.
