TASCAM PR-10 Portable Digital Audio Recorder (Black)
The PR-10 from TASCAM is an extremely compact digital audio recorder, ideal for recording interviews, lectures, music practice sessions, and much more. The pocket-sized unit can record high-quality WAV or MP3 files at rates up to 24-bit/48kHz. The unit records to readily-available microSD flash memory cards, allowing you to record hours of material and share it easily. A 2GB card is included for convenience.

A pair of omnidirectional microphones are perfect for live performance recording, band practice, meeting documentation, news gathering, classroom recording, or any memo/voice recording application where you need to capture the room with clarity. Sound is captured better than CD-quality so that quiet voices can still be heard in the final recording. Effects like noise filtering and voice boost allow you to make speech more intelligible when you play it back, and playback speed can be slowed down for easier transcription. A 2GB microSD card is included for hours of recording using AAA batteries, and you can transfer your recordings to a computer as WAV or MP3 files using the included USB cable.

• Two omnidirectional microphones
• Built-in speaker
• Kickstand for tabletop recording
• MP3 recording (32k to 320kbps)
• WAV recording (44.1k-48kHz, 24-bit)
• Playback effects like noise reduction, voice enhance, low cut and high cut
• Slow down playback without changing the pitch for transcription
• 1.5” W x 4.8” H x 0.6” D, 1.6oz without batteries
• Includes 2GB microSD card, stereo headphones, micro USB cable, (2x) AAA batteries

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/REKUPL59BYWV7 The listing says that one of the dimensions is 7″. It’s actually 4 3/4″ tall x 1.5″ wide x 0.6″ deep. That’s about as long as a pen, as thick as a thick pen, and as wide as a couple inches :) .

Oh yea, and it the tradition of TASCAM recorders it does a great job of capturing audio. In addition to great sound and a wealth of useful features, this recorder has one of my favorites. You can set a time to start and end recording. It will automatically turn on and start at the time you set. For me that means I can input the start and end times of a performance and it’s one less thing to think about when I get to a show.

Also nice is that it uses removable memory cards. Sometimes after I’ve recorded something the captured audio is worth more than the device. It’s nice to be able to remove the memory to prevent accidental erasure or having the recording stolen with the device.

Finally, Amazon shows this recorder along side a USB microphone in the “Frequently Bought Together” section. This device does have a USB jack. Do not get misled into thinking you can connect a USB microphone to this recorder (and have it work). The recorder will accept analog input but will not work with a USB mic.

Lastly, I’m providing an audio sample and comparison in the video portion of this review. You get to hear the same thing recorded simultaneously with this recorder, the Tascam DR07 Portable Digital Recorder, and with a Blue Microphones Snowball USB Microphone (White) directly into my computer. I don’t tell you until the end which is which. However here’s a hint, the DR07 has much better fidelity than the PR10. (However, the PR10 is more than adequate as a field voice recorder and much easier to carry.)

As noted by the previous reviewer, dimensions are smaller than indicated. It’s a bit pricey for an entry level recorder, but I personally find it much nicer in terms of sound quality and features as compared to the typical varieties you will find at your local brick and mortar stores. I have not used it extensively yet, but wanted to give some initial impressions since this is a new model with little information available at this time.

Pros:

Small, compact and very lightweight.

Nice feature set, record in PCM or MP3.

Can accept external power via micro USB.

Accepts standard AAA batteries as well as rechargeable Ni-MH.

Can specify battery type for more accurate recording times.

Transfer files to PC for editing. Manual split possible using PCM.

Accepts up to 32 GB microSDHC (16 GB more cost effective).

24-bit recording.

Built-in speaker and table top stand.

Option to use external microphone (powered 3.5mm).

Cons:

Feature set limited for those with more elaborate needs, but you should know that going in.

Standard USB would be nice, but a minor con.

Recording levels may not be satisfactory for die-hard audiophiles.

External speaker is mono, but you can use headphones so this too is minor.

Plastic construction feels a bit flimsy considering the price, but keeps weight down.

A little bit pricey if not on sale when you consider other options (including other Tascam models.)

On the whole though, the cons are fairly minor for casual/non-high end use and I still feel like it warrants a solid five. Defintely an easily pocketable recorder. I’ll try to post any significant updates later.

I’m very happy with my PR-10. The sound quality is pretty good and the pickups are great. I tested this out in class and left it recording on high input in my pocket. It picked up the class discussion very well and I can hear everyone speaking clearly. It is very easy to swap files out using the usb interface and i was quite impressed with how easy it was to simply drop a new file onto the tascam. I use it to record ideas and also to listen to songs i’m working on, like an mp3 player.

What I don’t like: I feel like this thing is as solid as an egg. It is very lightweight and the plastic construction suggests it will snap like a candybar (it is about the size of a snickers). It would be very cool if this came with some sort of protective case. As it is now, I simply keep it in a hardcover eyeglass case with spare batteries and headphones which works ok, but it is also cheap.

If you want a cheap yet quality portable digital recorder, this is one you should consider.

Tascam PR-10 – Does what it claims – fair microphones – complex screens and menu – complex – a lot to learn.

Few inputs and output – you will need adapters to plug in microphones and output to other devices.

If you can affort it, buy a higher grade model in t he Tascam line.
